A Tribute to Lola

Lola was my grandmother. In many ways she was like a mother to me. So in a way -I've been blessed to have two moms! Lola was well loved by all. It will be 10 years this year, Nov 2012 that she has been gone. Ironically the day she passed was the same as Marilyn's birthdate. The two never met (as I wasn't with my partner then), but both women had a way of sharing love in their own unique ways. I'm sure that her unconditional love would have encompassed my partner. I remember when I came out to her she simply said, "Chile' tell me something I didn't know! But, the good Lord made you -so HE knows what and whom HE created -HE makes no mistakes!"
Granny's handquilted blocks

My granny, didn't get any quilts done before her passing -as she started quilting very late in her years. Arthuritis (as she called it) got in her hands really bad -so she couldn't finish the quilt work that she started. I still have her quilt blocks that she started piecing around the age of 92. She used to say, "Baby I'm tryna make a hundred". Unfortunately, Granny passed away at 96 years of age. She had a long full life.

To this very day I still can't bring myself to place those blocks into a project. I guess that is part of the grief process -we move forward when we are ready. It takes as long as it takes for everyone.

Granny always dreamed of being able to make a "fancy" quilt. But between working, keeping house, volunteering at the enior citizen center, helping with grandbabies and church duties -along with the arthuritis, her dream of making a whole quilt didn't come to fruition. However, I learned from her that every quilter must have patience! Missed greatly!l
